University Funding

University courses, also known as degree programmes, are higher education qualifications typically studied full-time over three or more years. They are offered by universities and higher education institutions and lead to recognised academic qualifications such as a Bachelor’s degree (e.g. BA, BSc, or BEng), which can open the door to a wide range of careers or further study.

For students progressing to university, funding is available primarily through government-backed Student Finance. This includes a Tuition Fee Loan to cover the cost of course fees (paid directly to the university) and a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs such as accommodation, food, and travel. Additional financial support may be available for students from low-income households, those with disabilities, dependants, or who are care leavers.

Universities also often offer scholarships and bursaries based on academic achievement, background, or specific needs. Repayments for student loans begin only after the graduate is earning above a certain income threshold, making university more financially accessible for many students.
